Turns out it would almost be a bolt in swap in the '79 Lincoln Continental I'm planning to buy next weekend. It will bolt up the the C6 transmission that's in the car(with an adapter) and puts out just about the same HP and Torque as the factory 400CI V8. I'll just need to fab up some motor mounts, wire it and plumb it and it would be good to go. With the 4BT cummins I would see in the high 20's mpg wise. much better than the factory 12 mpg going down a hill. It would be the perfect highway cruiser.
Has anybody ever rolled coal in a big Lincoln?
I know the 80's continental you could get with a BMW Diesel but that was now a midsized car.
I've seen a few Caddies with a similar swaps(mostly 6BT swaps but the procedure is the same) but never a lincoln.

Maybe start here? http://www.4btswaps.com/forum/forum.ph…
I have no idea, I would probably not take on such a project, but it would be fun to play around with one that's already been done.

a junkyard? :p

Don't you know it's all about the journey, not the destination. Building it is half the fun. then when you go somewhere you can be proud that you built it with your own hands.

considering it only came in select bread trucks and industrial equipment it's harder to find than one might think. it's not something that's worth all that much but because it's relatively hard to find people that have them charge an arm and a leg for them.

This is an awesome idea. Except for the price of diesel at the moment. But that is a secondary consideration at best.

$5k for a used runner, $7k for a rebuilt one. Ouch.

Find an old delivery vehicle or panel truck. Almost all of the diesel ones had 4BT's in them

If you almost triple the fuel mileage I hardly think it's worth to mention that diesel is a bit more expensive you will more than make up for it.

That seems on the high side. without looking to hard I can find recently rebuilt ones for under 4K .

A 6BT and an transmission build is probably cheaper, lol. The MPG wouldn't be affected that much either, and it is a whole lot smoother.

A lot of Case IH equipment IIRC.

That's in Florida. What's it going to cost to ship that to Alberta? My links' engines are in Armstrong, B.C. and Aldersyde, AB.

But I already HAVE a project I'm too lazy to build :(

I live near a distribution hub for Fedex, and frito lay. Most 4bt for sale are from ex-fedex and frito lay trucks. Usually these trucks are for sale on craigslist. The frito-lay trucks are serviced more regularly by the company than the Fedex trucks.

Cool! Hardly seems "bolt-on" to me ... but cool.
I implore you to add a lot of sound deadening into the interior. You don't want to loose the smooth and relaxing experience that is driving a giant boat down the highway.

As cool as 4BT swaps are, if I were to go diesel with the car, it would be a 6BT or none at all. They're probably much easier to find because of the Dodge P/Us that had them for years. You could also probably achieve about the same mileage if you tried. If I didn't want to go that route but still go diesel, another option might be a 7.3 PSD (or maybe even a 7.3 IDI) out of a 95-97 F-250/350. That way, you've still got a V8 with similar displacement. Of course, with that said, I'm sure the PSD would be much heavier and a lot more difficult to swap. I'm sure a C6 wouldn't appreciate the engine much. Of course, if it were me, I would rather build the 400 or another gasser motor, and sleeper the hell out of the thing.
Then again, I'm not the one buying the car. You are. So you can do as you well wish. I'll still think it's badass regardless of what you choose to do, honestly.

I'd love to hop up the 400 but the 10mpg on a good day is scaring me already. The diesel would make it much more unique and more of a show stopper. I'm all about thinking outside the box. throwing bolt ons on the 400 is just too damn easy.
I'm dead set on putting a diesel in there be it a 4BT or 6BT. It's just a matter of time and money.
a 7.3 would be awesome but way too much work for what it's worth. I just want to make this thing into a nice oil burning highway cruiser that gets decent MPGs.
I was even thinking of getting a complete front cut off a bread truck. ~$3700 and it comes with everything. rad, intercooler, oil cooler, eaton fuller 5spd tranny, clutch.
Imagine a 5 speed stick diesel big body lincoln that gets 30mpg. It would be a little bit more fab work but probably cheaper over all.

Getting the front stub of a truck would be handy. You'd end up with everything you need that way in some form or another. And I see what you mean by unique. Keep us updated on the project. I'd love to see how it turns out.
